Greece Aircraft Disinsection Requirements: New Mandate Effective September 2025
Greece implemented mandatory aircraft disinsection effective September 18, 2025. The regulation — outlined in AIP Greece AIC 03/25 — applies to all aircraft arriving from countries identified by the Greek Ministry of Health as mosquito-risk areas. This includes private, commercial, and military flights. The United States is included on the risk list.
Does This Apply to Flights From the United States?
Yes. Greece's requirement is based on the presence of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the country of origin, and the United States qualifies under this framework. Operators who flew to Greece before September 2025 without disinsection documentation cannot assume the same approach will work now. The requirement is new, it is enforced, and the consequences of non-compliance are immediate.
What Method Does Italy Accept?
Greece explicitly accepts the Certificate of Residual Disinsection per ICAO Annex 9, Appendix 4. Aerosol in-flight disinsection is also accepted, but requires spray cans to remain onboard for inspection. Residual treatment eliminates that requirement and provides 60-day coverage for multiple trips to Greece within the validity window.
What Documentation Does Greece Require?
Two documents are required on arrival: the Certificate of Residual Disinsection (ICAO Annex 9, Appendix 4) and a General Declaration noting the details of the disinsection procedure (ICAO Annex 9, Appendix 1). Copies must be retained for at least three months and made available to authorities upon request.
We provide both documents as part of our standard documentation package.
Who Enforces This in Greece?
Inspections are conducted by the Aero-Health Authority at Athens International (LGAV) and by Regional Public Health and Health Control Services at other civil airports. At mixed-use airports, both civil and military health officers may be involved. Enforcement is active.
